Kogelkleppen kunnen worden gecombineerd met een pneumatische actuator (pneumatische kogelkleppen) of een elektrische actuator (elektrische kogelkleppen) voor automatisering en/of bediening op afstand. Afhankelijk van de toepassing kan automatisering met een pneumatische actuator versus een elektrische actuator voordeliger zijn, of omgekeerd.

Pneumatische actuators regelen kogelkleppen door de omzetting van persluchtenergie in mechanische beweging. Een roterende mechanische beweging is vereist in een kogelklep voor een 90 graden slag. Kogelkleppen van pneumatische actuators kunnen enkelwerkend of dubbelwerkend zijn. Een enkelwerkende pneumatische actuator maakt gebruik van één enkele persluchttoevoer om de klep te draaien en een veer om de klep terug te zetten in de normale stand. Een dubbelwerkende pneumatische actuator heeft twee persluchtingangen om de klep te draaien en terug te zetten in de oorspronkelijke stand.
