CORROSION RESISTANCE: 
Our steel withstands corrosive attacks better than any standard hardenable stainless steels, offering exceptional durability.
In most environments, its corrosion resistance is comparable to that of Alloy 304.
It is highly resistant to corrosion in various chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
However, it may be susceptible to crevice or pitting attacks if exposed to stagnant sea water for extended periods.
WELDABILITY:
Easily welded with most common fusion and resistance techniques, ensuring robust and reliable joints.
Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding due to potential issues.
Typically, no pre-heating is necessary, facilitating a smoother workflow.
Maintain inter-pass temperatures below 248°F to ensure optimal results.
Achieve superior toughness in the weld with a thorough heat treatment process.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
Demonstrates excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
Long-term high-temperature exposure may reduce toughness in the precipitation-hardened states.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
For forging, uniformly heat to 2150 / 2200°F and maintain for half an hour per inch of thickness.
Optimal hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F, suitable while the steel is still austenitic.
Re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F to prepare ideal conditions for hardening operations.
Cool forgings below 90°F to promote grain refinement and enhance quality.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
Alloy 17-4 is best for mild operations when annealed, due to its hardness in this state.
For severe cold working, heat treat to condition H1150 to minimize the risk of cracking.
A bend radius exceeding 7T is usually necessary for successful forming.
Re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature post cold forming improves stress corrosion resistance.
MACHINABILITY:
This alloy can be machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardened states.
Mechanical Properties:
Type 17-4PH stainless steel boasts excellent mechanical properties. Ideal for high strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance applications, 17-4PH stainless is also more cost-effective than many high nickel non-ferrous alloys.
