Het is een kleurloze transparante vloeistof met de geur van een mengsel van ethanol en aceton. Oplosbaar in water, maar ook in alcohol, ether, benzeen, chloroform en andere organische oplosmiddelen. Isopropanol is een belangrijk chemisch product en grondstof. Voornamelijk gebruikt in farmaceutische producten, cosmetica, kunststoffen, specerijen, coatings, enz
